Clean Energy Tour
St. Moritz sets a global example in nature conservation and a clean environment and has realized a comprehensive energy project involving renewable energy from hydropower, sun, wind and biogas, between 1,170 and 3,057 m altitude.
The lowest point is Switzerland’s oldest power station, below the St. Moritz lake on the River Inn, the highest is the Piz Nair on the weather divide and watershed between the northern and southern Alps. Its aerial cableway was totally rebuilt for the 2003 FIS Alpine Skiing Wold Championships. The cableway station was fitted with an ultramodern solar system, the summit with a special wind turbine. The various installations are included in the world’s first Clean Energy Tour.
Starting at St. Moritz railway station, the tour leads via Chantarella and Corviglia with the new aerial cableway up to Piz Nair. Here, and on the tracks of the Corviglia funicular, guests encounter an ultramodern solar power plant, a wind turbine facility in the landscape and as a model, visit Switzerland’s oldest power station and the Celerina sewage purification plant (biogas).
On the return journey, they explore the Heidi Flower Trail from Chantarella to the Heidi hut – one kilometre along the 2,000-metre contour line and the stone-pine/larch timber line with over 200 species of flowers and panoramic views. The route then follows the Schellenursli Trail (fairytale figure) back to St. Moritz, passing Lord Norman Foster’s impressive Chesa Futura, to the leaning tower. Next to this is the Kulm Hotel, where the first electric light in Switzerland was switched on in 1878. The Clean Energy Tour is a part of the Engadin St. Moritz Geopark, which is part of the
AlpenAkademie Südbünden educational programme.
