1st Junior Match Race on the St. Moritz Lake
The St. Moritz Sailing Club and the Swiss Youth Sailing Regatta Association based at Lake Constance, have collaborated to organize the first international junior match race, the "Prince of the Mountain", which will be held from the 30th August until the 1st September on the St. Moritz Lake.
Eight European youth teams will follow the route of the renowned "World Match Racing Tour" as they attempt to emulate the skills of their mentors, and will sail on the St Moritz Lake from the 30th August until the 1st September as they compete for the title of the "Prince of the Mountain". Amongst the competitors will be the local youth team "Giachem Racing" who will compete against teams from Germany, Poland, Austria, The Netherlands, Great Britain and Switzerland. Also participating in the event will be "Aloha", a team of Swiss veterans led by Roger Stocker. The Youth Regatta Association always invites one or two established teams to their regattas so that the youth teams can measure their performances against experienced teams. All competitors will sail "blu 26" boats which were originally constructed for the St. Moritz Match Race, and which are also sailed in the European Junior Championships and the Lake Constance Match Race series. And some of the competitors will be using this regatta as a final rehearsal for EUROSAF, the European Junior Match Race Championship.
After a Match Race Clinic on the 28th & 29th August, the first Regatta will commence on Friday 30th August. The Malaoja Wind and the opportunity on the St. Moritz Lake to sail close to the shore makes match racing in the Engadine a unique spectacle for both sailors and spectators.
