"TOUR Challenge" in 2014 in St. Moritz, Davos and Lenzerheide
The spectacular "TOUR Challenge" road cycling race will be held for the second time in September 2014, revisiting its established hosts from the premiere event - St. Moritz, Davos and Lenzerheide. The race, open to all, will be held from 4th - 7th September. Over three stages, the course covers approximately 350 kilometres and 8,000 vertical metres in altitude in a round trip from Davos to St. Moritz via Lenzerheide, and then back to Davos.
Due to traffic requirements, the course has been slightly altered from the first year's four stage event. The Challenge will commence on 4th September with an 11 kilometre mountain time trial in Davos's Dischmatal valley. The first day-long stage on the second day of the Challenge leads the participants from Davos over the Albula Pass to St. Moritz. In the second stage, which is unaltered, the riders descend into the Bergell Valley, and into Italy before climbing the Splugen Pass and then to their mountain destination in Lenzerheide. The final stage leads firstly from Lenzerheide over the Julier Pass, then though the Engadin to Susch, and then via the Fluela Pass back to Davos. "By switching the Albula and Julier Passes, the TOUR Challenge is not only longer, but also more attractive than the first event", said Flurin Bezzola, Course Director of the race. In total, the participants will cover about 350 kilometres, and 8,000 vertical metres.
From the enthusiastic feedback by competitors after the premiere of the event, the organizers and hosts see great potential in the new race: "As one of the major biking destinations in Switzerland, bike racing and bike athletes are of great importance. In 1933, the very first stage of the Tour de Suisse led from Zurich to Davos. Graubunden is just perfect for bike racing buffs and professionals, so the TOUR Challenge fits perfectly within our concept. We look forward to the coming year. The TOUR Challenge is one of the highlights of our summer calendar" says Reto Branschi, CEO of Tourist Destination Davos-Klosters. A similar view is held by Martin Berthod, Director of Sports and Events for St. Moritz Tourism: "We offer here in the high Engadine not only a perfect region for biking, but also a perfect road cycling region, as appreciated by the many professionals who are regular guests for altitude training." Those responsible in Lenzerheide are also planning for a long term association with the new bike project: "Cycling is very important for Lenzerheide, as shown by the construction of the new bike parks, the application to host the Mountain Bike World Cup, and World Championships, or to host events such as the Swiss Olympic Gigathlon - the TOUR Challenge is the perfect event to show cyclists the fantastic roads of our region", says Marco Michel, Marketing Director, Lenzerheide Marketing and Support AG.
