Excursion Tips

Boredom is a foreign word on an Engadin holiday thanks to a natural world that repeatedly amazes guests, a varied events calendar and an unparalleled cultural programme. Nevertheless, should you feel like an excursion, there are many inviting things to do. Such as enjoying a “gelato” on the Piazza at Poschiavo or visiting the idyllic Bergell mountain village of Soglio and Müstair Monastery.

National Park

National Park

Switzerland’s only national park covers an area of 170 km2 with 80 km of hiking trails that take visitors into an untouched forest, mountain and rock landscape. The National Park Centre in Zernez is a mine of information on the park and provides an ideal introduction to exploring it.

Lower Engadin with Guarda

Guarda

Guarda is one of the pearls of the Lower Engadin. A picture-book village and home of Schellenursli, a fairytale figure. Each of the attractive old Engadin houses has its own story and is decorated with inspiring sgraffito.

Val Müstair

St. Johann Monastery

The Ofen Pass road leads through the middle of the thick forests in the Swiss National Park to Val Müstair. This southern valley exudes an air of peace and tranquillity and the St. Johann Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage, is a magnet for visitors. Mild temperatures and old, unspoilt village centres are added attractions.

The trip by Rhaetian Railway to Scuol through the ever narrower Lower Engadin is a pleasure in itself. The next delight follows at Engadin Bad Scuol with indoor and outdoor pools, solaria, whirlpools, steam baths, saunas and a Roman-Irish spa.

Soglio

By postbus alongside the Upper Engadin lakes to Maloja. Then on over the Maloja Pass into Bergell to charming Soglio. A mountain village nestling on a sunny terrace with stone farmhouses, old manor houses (Palazzi) and extensive chestnut forests.

Just after the Maloja Pass, the road winds down to Bergell and on to Chiavenna (Italy). The attractive market town lies on the fork of the Maloja and Splügen Passes. Savour an Italian ice-cream and the warm southern ambiance of the old town.

Palazzo Salis is one of the most beautiful and most important Palais of Valtellina. Built during the XVII century by the Counts Salis, it represents a hystorical and architectonical milestone of the swiss history in Valtellina, with many Salis having played crucial roles as Governors or Vikars, or high military chiefs.
