Snowkiting

Snowkiting is a very new, zany sport, ideal for adrenaline addicts, in Switzerland mainly performed on snow. The Upper Engadin with its lake landscape has long been a mecca for snowkite pilots: the sport has been practiced here since 1991

A sport that at first only attracted a handful of crackpots is rapidly gaining in popularity. It is probably the play with the power of the wind that grabs beginners right from the start. Snowkiting takes place on Silvaplana between mid-January and mid-March, mostly on the Silvaplanersee lake. However, on the Bernina Pass, snowkiters can “sail” over frozen Lago Bianco from early December to mid-April.

Using a kite steered with 4 lines, the pilot converts the drag of the kite into speed. Pressure is increased by bracing the skis or snowboard against the drag and it’s possible to reach speeds of over 80 km/h. Learning how to tack is quickly mastered, making it easy to return to the starting point.

The Silvaplana Snowkite School has always kept up with the development of the sport and has provided snowkiting courses since 1994. It ranks as one of the world’s major snowkiting schools with a reputation for quality in all areas.
