White Turf on 7th, 14th and 21st February 2010
At the White Turf races in St. Moritz international jockeys riding noble thoroughbreds from all parts of Europe enthral visitors from all over the world every year. On the three race Sundays in February more than 35,000 spectators will throng the frozen lake of St. Moritz to watch captivating and entertaining events against a magnificent backdrop, amidst the Alpine world of the Engadine. This time there will again be major innovations in how the lake is used in matters of environmental care.
Ecologically speaking, White Turf points the way to the future. Thanks to newly developed heating methods, almost 40% of the former energy consumption in the tent city will be saved. Furthermore, as from 2010 the lake will no longer be polluted by parking cars and their emissions. In cooperation with the St. Moritz municipality, new parking spaces have been created on a part of the polo lawn near the Olympic ski jump and a shuttle service will be arranged. On production of the parking ticket for the multi-storey car park Serletta, situated only a few minutes’ walk from the lake, visitors will receive a betting slip worth 4 Swiss Francs at the information desk.
As usual, on the three race Sundays gallop and trotting races as well as the crowd-pulling Skikjöring will alternate every 30 minutes. Besides sprint races over 1100m, gallop races will include other flat races over various lengths and trotting races will be held over 1700m and 1800m. The White Turf world exclusive, the Skikjöring, is a particular favourite with the spectators. The skiers are pulled by riderless thoroughbreds over a distance of 2,700m at speeds of up to 50 km/h. Courage, stamina, strength and skiing skills decide who will collect the greatest number of points over the three race Sundays in order to be crowned the year’s "King of the Engadine".
Besides the captivating equestrian sports, show interludes – such as this year’s appearance of a riderless "Hungarian Post" with eight thoroughbreds – art, international catering and live music are also an integral part of the event on the frozen lake of St. Moritz, enhancing the value of White Turf as an all-round experience.
In 2010, Rudolf Fopp will carry for the last time the prime responsibility as the White Turf President and CEO. His successor has already been designated; as from 2011, local Silvio Staub who is also active in horseracing and currently a member of the board of directors and the management committee, will take up his duties.
